American AAdvantage is Matching United Premier Status for Free!

Update.   This offer has ended.  There was very high demand and AA is working through a large backlog of match requests.  One reader who tried to match toward the end of the offer informed me that his request for status match was denied.

Thanks for your interest in making American Airlines your first choice
for all your travel needs. We understand that there have been some
misunderstandings regarding ways to attain AAdvantage elite status
without meeting standard criteria. I am sorry to disappoint you, but the
offer you are expecting is not currently available.

A very vague explanation. It’s not clear why this reader’s request was denied (he was Premier Silver) or what the misunderstanding was.  Originally this was a targeted offer, but AA was  matching all requests including those not specifically targeted.  Based on the unexpected demand, it seems AA pulled back and starting denying those who were not specifically targeted.

American Airlines is currently matching United Airlines Premier status for free!  And it simply takes a phone call and proof of your United Premier status.

Step 1:  Call AA at 1-800-882-8880.  AA will send you an e-mail.  See sample below.

Step 2:  Reply to the email with a copy of your Premier card or screen shot of your account summary.  You can also FAX the documentation to  1-817-963-7882.  That’s it!

This is almost certainly a limited time offer.  If you’re interested, I would move on it quickly.   Last night, American Airlines’ AAdvantage program won the 2012 Airline Program of the Year at the Freddie Awards (something like the “Oscars” of loyalty programs).  Read our overview of the AAdvantage program here.

AAdvantage is flying high right now and given the growing pains United is facing with its merged MileagePlus/former-One Pass loyalty program, it appears AA is seeking to take full AAdvantage.  Yes, bad puns I realize.
