Because AirTran Airways is now part of Southwest Airlines, you can redeem your credits for flights on both AirTran Airways and Southwest Airlines. In 2011, Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran Airways and is currently in the process of folding it into the Southwest brand. For now, the two brands are operating as separate airlines. As part of the process, Southwest Airlines has aligned the AirTran Airways A+ Rewards with its Rapid Rewards to allow for easy credit conversion between the parent company’s two frequent flier programs.

AirTran Airways is 100 percent owned by Southwest Airlines. As of March 1, 2012, Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways operate under a single FAA operating certificate. About AirTran Airways A+ Rewards Program

  • Earn credits when flying AirTran Airways: each one-way flight earns one credit in coach and business class tickets receive an extra 0.5 credit.
  • Credits can also be earned when renting from Hertz: earn a 0.5 credit for rentals four days or less and earn 1 credit for rentals of 5 days or more.
  • Redeeming credits:
    • one way coach flight = 8 credits
    • one way Business class flight = 16 credits
    • one way Business class upgrade = 4 credits
  • Elite status: achieved by earning  10 credits within 90 days or 25 credits with in a 365-day period.
  • Elite members enjoy perks such as complimentary business class upgrades, free first and second checked bags, and free assigned seats at booking with any fare class.
  • A+ Rewards Credits can be converted into Southwest Rapid Rewards Credits on a 1 to 1 basis.
